My Ontario Family Court matter started in 2002. I went through two lawyers and they really got me shafted. The first lawyer carried out behind closed door dealings with the other lawyer without my knowledge or consent which destroyed me financially and emotionally. I was routinely denied access despite an order for access. At one point I did not see my daughter for almost 18 months.

My second lawyer was full of promises of results, but apart from running a large bill did nothing other than write meaningless letters and make pointless phone calls.

I then got sick of lawyers and used a paralegal in Toronto who did help me get on to welfare, obtain a legal aid certificate and a referral to a lawyer. This got rid of my arrears but left access a nightmare. My legal aid certificate expired and the paralegal spent several months promising action that never happened. I’d hear lots of words, my phone calls were not returned or if they were it was way too late and eventually I realized that I had to find support somewhere else and at the same time a friend referred me to the Ottawa Men’s Centre.

At the time I could not afford a lawyer and still cannot afford a lawyer however the Ottawa Men’s Centre immediately helped me prepare some high quality documents ready for court and for the first time the judge read my documents and he was able to see exactly what had been going on regarding access. I learned that judges don’t read documents unless they are very well written.  Since then much has been accomplished, for instance access is now more regular and we have succeeded in obtaining an order for the involvement of the office of the children's lawyer. The Ottawa Men’s Centre gave me essential coaching and invaluable information throughout the process including having my documents reviewed by a lawyer prior to filing.

 I live in Alberta and the matter is in Ontario Superior Family Court. I needed help that was dependable, trustworthy and who would actually return phone calls. I needed someone with drive and the sincerity to help me in my difficult time. Their conduct has always been so refreshingly prompt  and professional it’s a father’s dream come true. I was impressed by the fact that they have a network of lawyers who can be consulted at anytime including late on weekend evenings and provide input on the most important decisions. They have ten years experience in providing lawyer referrals which prevents a lot of problems and promotes a smoother path to tread. I have no hesitation in recommending the Ottawa Men’s Centre to any father.
